Wallsend is a large residential suburb located 11 kilometres northwest of Newcastle's central business district, in the local government area of the City of Newcastle. The suburb's built up areas are concentrated in its eastern portion, while its west consists largely of undeveloped bushland. Wallsend is situated between Jesmond to the east and Cameron Park to the west.
The Awabakal and Worimi peoples were the original inhabitants of the City of Newcastle lands, of which Wallsend forms a part. Wallsend was named after a coalmining township in northern England. Alexander Brown gave the name to the area in the 1850s when he purchased land in the district. The Newcastle-Wallsend Coal Company opened in Wallsend in 1861. In the coming decades, Wallsend grew as a strong coalmining district.
Wallsend's commercial area is found in the suburb's centre, between Wallsend Park and Federal Park. The suburb's eastern portion is largely a developed residential area, while its western half remains as mostly undeveloped bushland. Brickworks Park is found in Wallsend's east, not far from Jesmond Bushland, which lies adjacent to Wallsend's eastern border.
