Tingira Heights is a residential suburb located 16 kilometres southwest of Newcastle's central business district, in the local government area of the City of Lake Macquarie. The suburb is found roughly halfway between Lake Macquarie and Redhead Beach and enjoys proximity to central Newcastle. Tingira Heights is situated between Mount Hutton to the north and Floraville to the south.
The Awabakal people were the original inhabitants of the land that makes up Tingira Heights today. The suburb was largely developed during the 1960s and is named in honour of the Aboriginal Tingira tribe. Tingira is an Aboriginal word meaning "open sea". A ship of the same name was Australia's first naval training vessel in 1912. In 1965 the H.M.A.S Tingira Old Boys Association requested to have a town named after the ship, and the suburb was subsequently named Tingira Heights.
Bush land permeates many of Tingira Heights' residential streets, lending the suburb a pleasant leafy atmosphere. Tingira Heights Nature Reserve is found in the suburb's west and occupies a significant portion of land. Croudace Bay on Lake Macquarie is located nearby to Tingira Heights' western border, while Redhead Beach and the Pacific Ocean are found a little further afield from the suburb's eastern border.
