Speers Point is a residential and recreational lakeside suburb located 17 kilometres southwest of Newcastle's central business district, in the local government area of the City of Lake Macquarie. Speers Point sits on the northern shore of Lake Macquarie and features a number of waterfront residential properties and parks. Speers Point is situated between Warners Bay to the east and Teralba to the west.
Following European settlement, Speers Point was settled in 1828. William Brooks established the first property in the area and named it Lochend. A colliery began operating in Speers Point in 1843 - the Lochend Colliery. Coal mining was the primary driver of commerce in the suburb, much like Newcastle as a whole.
Speers Point Park and Speers Point Public Jetty are located in the suburb's southwest, on the shores of Lake Macquarie and Cockle Creek. A number of sporting fields are found nearby. The suburb's residential areas are concentrated in its centre and along the waterfront. The geographical feature after which the suburb is named, Speers Point, is located in the suburb's southeast, on Lake Macquarie.
