New Lambton Heights is a small suburb located nine kilometres west of Newcastle's central business district, in the local government areas of the City of Newcastle and the City of Lake Macquarie. The suburb is the site of Newcastle's major hospital complex, including John Hunter Hospital. Bushland separates the complex from the suburb's southern residential portion. New Lambton Heights is situated between Lambton to the north and Kotara to the south.
The Awabakal people were the original inhabitants of the land that makes up New Lambton heights today. Croudace House was built in the area in 1863 for Thomas Croudace and his family. Royal Newcastle Hospital purchased the house in the 1920s and it remains a part of the suburb's hospital complex today. John Hunter Hospital was opened in New Lambton Heights in 1991.
The suburb's major hospital complex is situated in the north of New Lambton Heights and is largely surrounded by bushland. Blackbutt Nature Reserve is found adjacent to the suburb's southeastern border. New Lambton Heights enjoys generous portions of bushland within its folds and is well known for its leafy streetscape.
