Merewether is a residential and recreational beachside suburb located three kilometres southwest of Newcastle's central business district, in the local government area of the City of Newcastle. A dynamic inner-city suburb, Merewether is home to Merewether Beach and Merewether Ocean Baths. A significant portion of Glenrock State Conservation Area is located in the suburb's south. Merewether is situated between Hamilton South to the north and Whitebridge to the south.
Following European settlement, the suburb was originally a part of the Burwood Estate, and is named after the former estate's owner, Christopher Merewether. Merewether was incorporated as a municipality in 1885 and became part of the newly formed "City of Greater Newcastle" in 1938. Merewether Surf Life Saving Club was established in 1907. The Merewether Ocean Baths opened in 1935 and remain the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere.
Merewether Ocean Baths are located at the suburb's coastal midpoint, at the southern end of Merewether Beach. Dixon Park is also found adjacent to Merewether Beach. The coastal Glenrock State Conservation Area occupies the southern portion of the suburb and is home to Airsports Newcastle Paragliding.
