Merewether Heights is a residential suburb located six kilometres southwest of Newcastle's central business district, in the local government area of the City of Newcastle. History

Following the European settlement of Australia, the greater Merewether area was originally a part of the Burwood Estate, and is named after the former estate's owner, Christopher Merewether. Merewether was incorporated as a municipality in 1885 and became part of the newly formed "City of Greater Newcastle" in 1938. Merewether Surf Life Saving Club was established in 1907. The Merewether Ocean Baths opened in 1935 and remain the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere.
