Kotara is a commercial and residential suburb located nine kilometres southwest of Newcastle's central business district, in the local government area of the City of Newcastle. Kotara is one of Newcastle's largest retail precincts, with a significant commercial district located in its northeast. The suburb is situated between New Lambton to the north and Kotara South to the south.
The Awabakal people were the first inhabitants of the area that makes up Kotara today. In the late 1800s, the Australasia Coal Company operated a coalmine near Kotara. In the 20th century, Kotara developed residentially as a "garden suburb" and expanded in population following WWII. Westfield Kotara shopping centre, formerly known as Kotara Fair and Garden City, opened in 1965.
Westfield Kotara and a number of other large retailers are based in Kotara's northeast. Kotara Train Station is found in the suburb's central residential district, adjacent to Kotara Park. Blackbutt Nature Reserve is partially located in the suburb's northern fringe.
