Carrington is a riverside suburb located three kilometres northwest of Newcastle's central business district, in the local government area of the City of Newcastle. Carrington is largely surrounded by water and is separated from Newcastle CBD and Stockton by the Hunter River. The suburb contains a mix of residential, commercial and industrial precincts. Carrington is situated between Tighes Hill to the north and Newcastle CBD to the south.
Following European settlement, the area that makes up Carrington today was known as Chapman's Island in 1804. The suburb first developed as a residential area in the 1860s, with access to the island achieved via rowboat or a punt. The area was largely working class thanks to its proximity to nearby industrial works. A shantytown called "Texas" existed in the suburb during the Great Depression of the 1930s.
Today, Carrington is a mix of industrial, commercial and residential land. Its residential area is largely concentrated in the suburb's centre. A number of parks exist in the suburb, particularly on the shores of Throsby Creek, including Connolly Park, Carrington Foreshore Park and Grahame Park.
